Tournament Overview

The structure of the end of year tournament will be an all inclusive, 3 game guarantee, jamboree style event. All teams will be included, not simply the top ranked teams. For regular season play, each of the four CCHL Age Groups (10U, 12U, 14U and 18U) have two distinct conferences. Those conferences for regular season play are defined as the Northern Conference and Southern Conference.

For the purposes of the CCHL Cup, both conferences at each age group will be combined and then divided into multiple divisions of no more than eight teams. These divisions will be defined as Division I, Division II, Division III and Division IV where necessary. These divisions will be identified at the end of regular season play using year end final standings to determine division placement and seeding within the division.

Dedication of the Tournament

In 2018, our hockey community lost one of its great ones. Joe Loschiavo served as the Capitol Corridor Hockey League Chairman for many years and contributed greatly to our community as a beloved coach and leader. The void left by Joe will be felt by hundreds of players and families who had the pleasure of learning from him—and from his colleagues who worked beside him within our sport and his various commitments. Joe’s lasting impact continues to live on through the growth of the players as individuals and athletes. We at the CCHL will be forever grateful to Joe for his leadership and guidance in the growth of our league. In an effort to keep Joe’s spirit and leadership soaring in all of us for years to come, the CCHL proudly rededicates its playoff tournament as the Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup.

Rules

The Capital Corridor Hockey League is sanctioned by USA Hockey and the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association. The rules for the tournament have been revised and published as part of the regular season rulebook. Section 7 titled CCHL Cup Tournament Rules is now part of the standard rule book, found here.

Buffalo Scoring

The End of Season Tournament will use the "Buffalo Point System" for the preliminary rounds. Under this system, ten points are at stake in each game as follows:

  • Period win - 2 points
  • Period tie - 1 point
  • Game win - 4 points
  • Game tie - 2 points

Marshals or in some cases CCHL Team Managers will submit game results to StatMonsters as they normally would with Traditional Scoring. StatMonsters will automatically calculate the Period and Game Points mentioned above for you.

In Buffalo Scoring, a team's ranking or seed is based on its total number of points accumulated (period points + game points) throughout each game. Where with Traditional Scoring, game points are only awarded at the conclusion of each game based on the total goals scored by each team.

In addition, there will be no overtime or shootouts in tournament preliminary round games – a tied game will remain a tied game and each team will earn two points. Game situation rules for equal ice time are the same as in regular season. Tournament consolation games shall end as a tie if tied at the end of overtime.

Scheduling for the Cup

All CCHL Cup games will be scheduled after the final weekend of the regular season. Like last year, the intention for the 2019-2020 season is for all cup games to be played over two weekends in March. This is a desired goal, but is subject to available ice.

Playing Time

Playing time for non-elimination round games will be three (3) 12 minute periods. Elimination rounds and finals will have three (3) 15 minute periods with an overtime period and ultimately a shootout if needed.

Seeding

Initial seeding for teams will be determined based on the final standings in both the Northern and in the Southern Conferences within each of the four CCHL Age Groups (10U, 12U, 14U and 18U). Final standings are defined in section 2.5 title Division Standing Determination of the CCHL rule book, found here.

Seedings cannot be determined until all regular season games have been played.

As of December 10, 2019:

  • The 10U Age Groups regular season ends the weekend of 2/23.
  • The 12U Age Groups regular season ends the weekend of 2/23.
  • The 14U Age Groups regular season ends the weekend of 2/23.
  • The 18U Age Groups regular season ends the weekend of 2/22.
