Remembering Beloved Coach and Leader: Joe Loschiavo

On September 23, 2018, the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) youth ice hockey community lost one of its greats. Joseph Victor Loschiavo dedicated his life to the service of his community, especially to youth sports as a beloved coach and leader. Joe served as the Capital Corridor Hockey League (CCHL) Chairman for many years. He was the Bowie Hockey Club President for the past two years and a Bowie Hockey Club Coach for more than ten.

“It is difficult to put into words what Joe meant to Bowie Hockey Club and youth hockey as a whole. His boundless energy and imagination left all who knew him inspired to work harder and to give more of themselves to others. Bowie Hockey Club has been profoundly impacted by his loss but, even more so, by his life. Our players and families will be ever grateful for his kind and genuine demeanor in addition to his invaluable service to our Club. We are forever thankful to Cathy, Nico, Cam, and Jake for sharing Joe with us for so many years.”    — Lori Jones, President, Bowie Hockey Club

A dedicated leader who inspired many

“Joe helped transform the CCHL into what it is today. Youth ice hockey in the DMV area grew exponentially under Joe’s watch. The league attributes its growth and thriving organization to the foundation Joe laid. We all feel the tremendous void left by his passing. However, his legacy lives on through the hundreds of players, families, and colleagues he inspired while in our presence.”

— Brian McCarthy, current CCHL Chairman, Director & Head Coach, Northern Virginia Ice Dogs

Generous with his time, especially with friends and family

“Joe’s passion for youth hockey, as well as other regional sports and local community involvement was second to none. I personally don’t know another individual who dedicated his time, effort, and energy to others more than Joe. Even when work demanded his time, Joe always put his friends and family, and the important things in life ahead of all else. He’d make up the extra work hours if needed, but his time, generosity, and outreach always came first. Joe didn’t short change anything or anyone while he was with us.”

— Chris Battles, Master Scheduler, Northern Virginia Hockey Club and Forever Friend

The void left by Joe is certainly felt by his former players and their families who had the pleasure of learning from him—and from his colleagues who worked beside him within the sport and his various commitments. Joe’s lasting impact continues to live on through the growth of the players as individuals and athletes.

The CCHL will be forever grateful to Joe for his leadership and guidance in the growth of our league. In an effort to keep Joe’s spirit and leadership soaring in all of us for years to come, the CCHL proudly rededicates its playoff tournament as the Joe Loschiavo Memorial Cup.
